New Directions

I feel like each exploration I have done has something that I can take away and use in my everyday practice. However, the blog that resonated with me to the most was when I researched into developing remote libraries in Canada. Last year our school committed to Reconciliation by having a Blanket Ceremony for a few local Indigenous peoples. This ceremony grounded us and helped us move forward in our journey. This year we have a Reconciliation committee that is helping our school continue to grow and learn. After doing my blog post, I emailed the committee to tell them about the amazing work that Books With No Bounds was doing for Canadian libraries. I would like to bring this forward to the committee as a school focus for next year. I think that this would be a great charity to support in our Elementary school because our students can relate to other students their age, it is within Canada and literacy is a large focus in our school. Books With No Bounds was started by two teenagers in Ontario and their commitment to helping Indigenous community’s have new books in their libraries is inspiring. I hope to create a student committee to have students run and be a large part of the fundraising. This will help create student ownership over this project as well as increase the learning and commitment to the fundraising. I would also like to reach out to Books With No Bounds to see if there were any B.C. schools they are affiliated with. Being able to help more local children will may help increase involvement and connection students will have. Overall, I think that my research done on my blog will help my own Reconciliation journey, as well as my students.

  1. Hello Jennifer,

I recall reading about your blog post on Books With No Bounds! I am glad that you resonated with the library programs in remote library, as I felt the same way about the organization called Room To Read. This organization went to developing countries to create bilingual libraries. I can really appreciate how motivated your school is to Reconciliation. Having a whole ceremony must have been so powerful for students and staff, and then to have a Committee is amazing. This is definitely something I value and would like to bring up at my school !

  2. Hi Jennifer,
How impactful! It's awesome to see that you are not only taking learning away from the modules but sharing it with your students. I would love to hear what initiatives your school takes on surrounding Books with no Bounds!

  3. I appreciate the way in which you have taken something from your explorations and considered how to connect it to your school and district initiatives. I am curious to see what comes from this connection. I think there is excellent potential. I wonder if this is a direction you want to explore for your Future Vision Project?
