Moving Forward with Reconciliation

Inspired by my previous posts, I would like to create a presentation for my school’s Reconciliation Committee in regards to the nonprofit Books With No Bounds. Supporting literacy in Indigenous communities would be a great commitment our school could make for the upcoming year. My goal for this class is to present to the committee a PowerPoint, video, or written proposal to explain why and how we could support Books With No Bounds. I have already brought the idea of this charity to the committee and they would like to have more information. As a result, this project would be a great way to present a fully formed idea which will increase my likelihood of the committee being on board. To start I have contacted Books With No Bounds to get initial information from them. My worry is that I won’t hear back from the nonprofit, which would mean that I would not feel comfortable raising money for them. My plan is to give them a few days to respond, especially considering that it’s the weekend. However, if I do not have a response by Thursday, I will have to go to plan B. My alternative plan would be to do something similar, by donating to the charity Books For Me! (http://www.booksformevancouver.org/). This is another nonprofit that is based out of Vancouver, which I appreciate because that is a local charity, benefiting local people. They are in 14 locations, including Elementary schools, B.C. Women’s Hospital and community Centers. Their goal is to provide free books to children aged 2-12 who do not have the opportunity to buy their own. I think that both of these charities are worthy of our support and I look forward to diving into a proposal for our school.

  2. I appreciate your project aim to connect, draw awareness to and contribute to a literacy project outside of school. I can see this being very engaging and rewarding for students and staff. You will want to consult the project rubric to ensure you can demonstrate all aspects. You may also want to consult some of the literature in order to speak to how such projects impact literacy needs.
