Here we go!

I have heard back from Books with no Bounds! This means that I will be going forward with my proposal to have that charity be a focus for our Reconciliation Committee for next year. This means that I will be creating a video to bring to a committee meeting. In this committee are various staff members of our school, our Principal, S.E.A’s and teachers. The purpose of this video will be to show information about Books with no Bounds through pictures, news articles and facts about the cofounders and their work. I am hoping they will use this information to green light various fundraisers that we could run as a whole school, by individual classes and in the library. As both a librarian and classroom teacher at my school, I would like to use my class next year to plan a class fundraiser. This way the students generate their own ideas and become more invested in the project. By having a coin drive, bake sale, bottle drive or whatever they choose, I will be there to help my class implement and support them on their own journey. As the librarian, I would like to do a whole school fundraiser. I would like to propose a duct tape the Librarian to the wall. I have seen this fundraiser done before, it generates a lot of support and is a fun way to create community. I would suggest that for every student who brings in $5, they would get a long piece of duct tape to tape me to the wall. One thing I would have to consider is what to do for students who donate more than $5. Would there be a tiered system where you get to do other things, like silly string the librarian, if you donate more money. Or if you donate more, there would be no extra incentive. Overall I am excited to create this proposal. You don’t often get to do a project for school that will directly impact both your own school and students across Canada. I look forward to seeing how this plan pans out.

  1. How exciting that you have heard back from Books with no Bounds and are working on an initiative that supports literacy locally and across Canada. You are engaged in very meaningful work and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you. I hope you will continue to share updates on your blog or by other means. I also encourage you to consult some literature and research. Perhaps the committee or even Books with no Bounds can point you in the right direction. I also encourage you to come up with a timeline for your project which marks the major events you hope to do next year. For example, an introductory assembly, a newsletter home, a post to the school webpage, a visual of how much you are raising etc.

  2. I like the idea of having a video. I think when people see things sometimes they stick rather than read them. I also love the idea of the duct tape. Who wouldn't wan to duct taps a teacher to the wall. This would definitely encourage me to donate some money! Once the students have fundraised would they be apart of the process of buying the books? Would they be apart of passing the money on? I think when students are apart of this process sometimes it can have a great impact on what they were able to accomplish.
